ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Canton home suffered heavy fire damage around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 22 when an overheated air conditioner cord sparked a blaze, and officials said the structure will likely be razed.  FOX 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bloom cannabis opened as Massillon’s first marijuana shop on Aug 22 at 254 Federal Ave. NW in the Town Plaza Shopping Center—selling both recreational and medical products daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and receiving a warm welcome from local residents.  The Repository

CRIME NEWS

  • On Aug. 21 at 11:53 p.m., Canton police began searching for the driver of a gray Ford Edge SUV that hit and dragged a 52-year-old motorcyclist near Harmont Avenue and Fairmount Boulevard NE— the rider was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital where he is expected to recover.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fairless High School in Brewster won a $5,000 prize from T-Mobile’s Friday Night 5G Lights contest and will use the funds to upgrade its softball field—replacing gravel behind home plate with cement and addressing mismatched bleachers. It is one of five Ohio schools chosen from 450 nationwide and is now in the running for a $1 million prize if community engagement on social media continues.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Labor Day on September 1, a federal holiday—will close government offices, banks, and delivery services like FedEx and UPS while USPS delivers only Priority Mail, and retail stores such as Walmart keep regular hours. In Canton, trash pickup will be delayed by one day—residents should verify schedules with local providers.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Canton McKinley High School football—led by Kyelin West’s 83-yard run and Chris Crook’s 92-yard interception return—scored six touchdowns in a 43-25 win over Warren Harding on August 22.  The Repository
  • Longtime Cleveland volunteer Carl 'DiMag' Dephillipo, who worked for the Guardians and Browns for 50 years, amassed a huge sports memorabilia collection that began auction online on Aug. 21; his family will hold a second sale on Sept. 11 plus the auction includes autographed bats, balls, photos, and other items from famous players.  The Repository
  • Perry High School assistant Dave Weber surprised head coach Spencer Leno with a game ball after the Panthers beat Central Catholic on August 21st—marking his first win celebration.  The Repository
  • Fairless High School running back Jack Kirby scored a touchdown late in the first half that helped the Falcons take a 21—7 lead over Sandy Valley.  The Repository
  • On Friday, Aug. 22, the Jackson Polar Bears hosted the Chardon Hilltoppers at Robert Fife Stadium—Jackson came off an 8-4 season with a playoff run while Chardon ended 2024 with an 8-3 record and a playoff win.  The Repository
