CULTURE NEWS

  • Local events in Canton and Northeast Ohio promise a busy few days as today brings a Led Zeppelin tribute in Massillon and a Rock for Resilience benefit at The Auricle, while tomorrow Record Store Day rolls out at local shops along with a Canton fashion show at 6:30 p.m. and a Dixon’s Violin concert at the Cultural Center; other planned activities include The Shootouts’ album release show in Akron on May 31, a Mark Twain event at Roxy Theatre, a Hairspray musical at Players Guild, Macy Gray’s hometown show on July 30, and an Addams Family musical comedy on April 15 — a colorful lineup for all ages.  The Repository

  • Bradford pear trees were banned in Ohio in January 2023 because they harm native ecosystems—official sources now advise planting native alternatives like serviceberry and dogwood for safer landscaping. The invasive Callery pears, once popular for their attractive blossoms, are known to overrun local species and alter natural plant communities.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Liv's Law, also known as HB 37, is now in effect to impose harsher penalties on drivers with repeated OVI offenses by mandating longer prison terms and fines up to $25,000 for aggravated vehicular homicide. The law, named after 22-year-old Olivia Wright who was killed by a drunk driver in 2020, allows police to collect oral fluid samples from impaired drivers+ refusal to cooperate may lead to additional charges.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Country singer Chase Bryant will perform on April 25 at the Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health anniversary event held at Kent State University at Stark—marking its 50th anniversary. He will share his personal mental health journey and perform a few songs as part of a program that includes dinner, with $75 tickets available through Monday.  The Repository

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ohio’s spring wild turkey season will begin soon with a two-day youth hunt on April 12 and 13 and adult hunts starting April 19 in most areas while the Northeast season begins May 3. Each hunter may take one bearded turkey—rules require using legal gear and reporting any catch online—to help track the population.  The Repository

  • The 80th annual North-South Classic will be held at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon on April 26—featuring two games for over 120 graduating seniors—and tickets cost $10 for both games.  The Repository
