COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Summit County and surrounding communities, including Akron and Canton, can dispose of cleaned live Christmas trees for recycling + curbside pickup through early January. Check local guidelines for drop-off locations and rules on decoration removal, as each community has its own schedule.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Power of the Pen competition returns for a district tournament for seventh and eighth graders at Mount Union on Jan. 9 with about 230 students from 22 area schools competing; top performers will advance to a regional round at Lake Elementary on Feb. 22.  The Repository

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents across Stark County have many ways to get rid of their Christmas trees until January, including curbside collection and drop-offs at town facilities—such as at Canton Township's parking lot at 4711 Central Ave. SE and Brewster's park site.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio law allows tinted windows if drivers ensure front side windows let in at least 50% of light and windshields 70%—drivers are advised to check that their tint meets these requirements to remain legal.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Aultman Health System notified patients on Dec. 26 that a Cerner system breach may have exposed personal data including names, Social Security numbers, and health records. Cerner is offering free identity protection and credit monitoring, and patients can call 833-918-1127 (engagement number B156918) for more details.  The Repository

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Families in the Akron and Canton area will enjoy winter break activities including escape rooms, indoor gaming centers, and holiday light displays at local botanical gardens. Events continue throughout winter break, offering interactive fun for all ages (check local listings for details).  The Repository

  • Homebuyers planning a 2026 purchase are advised to prepare by listing must-haves, checking credit scores, and assessing budgets, according to the BIA of Stark & East Central Ohio.
