BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a 90-day ban on THC-infused drinks and gummies sold outside licensed dispensaries, saying these products are dangerous for children — retailers must remove them by 12:01 a.m. Oct. 14. Local business owners in Canton are now working fast to sell off remaining inventory as the ban may cut into their revenues.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Actor Peter Billingsley will host a screening of A Christmas Story at Canton Palace Theatre on December 21 — the event will have a lively conversation with audience Q&A, behind-the-scenes stories, a Toy for Tots fundraiser, and a leg lamp giveaway. Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. online and at the box office with a limited number of VIP passes for a pre-show photo opportunity.  WKYC
  • The Canton Ballet is celebrating its 60th season — it will perform 'Peter and the Wolf' on October 11 at Umstattd Hall as part of its season kickoff.  The Repository

FINANCE NEWS

  • Nobody won the Mega Millions jackpot on Tuesday, October 7, and thousands of smaller prizes were given statewide—raising the jackpot to $575 million with a cash option of $264.6 million ahead of today's 11 p.m. drawing.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal offices, banks and the USPS will be closed on Columbus Day, a federal holiday also known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and many schools will be shut while some private delivery services run on limited schedules—Canton trash pickup will continue as normal.  The Repository
  • Canton Parks and Recreation is asking voters to approve a new replacement tax levy to raise about $6.38 million a year from a 4.5-mill tax starting in 2027. Other Stark County communities are on ballots for fire, police and road levies that will add new taxes for homeowners based on property values — measures set to support essential services and park improvements.  The Repository
  • Howland Township trustee Matthew Vansuch announced the region’s first diverging diamond interchange will open today—nearly a year ahead of schedule—to ease congestion and improve safety at the intersection of OH-82 and OH-46. The $20 million project began in 2023 and is expected to reduce crashes by over 30%.  FOX 8
  • On Oct. 21, the Canton area League of Women Voters will host an 'Immigration: Myths and Facts' forum (6:30 to 8 p.m.) at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Cleveland Avenue SW to explain changes in U.S. immigration policy with Stark County attorneys Sandra Boogaard, Mary Lyn Pac-Urar, and Barbara Joan Stelea. Retired Canton Law Director Joe Matuccio will moderate the discussion, and private security will be on site for safety.  The Repository

  • The Browns traded Greg Newsome II to the Jaguars on October 9th for Tyson Campbell and draft picks, and Denzel Ward said he felt hurt and shed tears for his friend. Rookie Dom Jones now has a greater role on defense — a sign the team's lineup is changing as they focus on winning.  The Repository
  • Coach Renzy Parnell—who values the league title dearly—said his undefeated McKinley team is chasing a share of the Federal League championship by beating Lake this week. New offensive lineman Kayvon Dawkins—brought in for injured Logan Hayes—was praised for his instant impact on the game.  The Repository
  • High school girls tennis players from the Greater Akron, Canton and Kent area are competing in a district tournament at Springside Athletic Club in Akron—Division I players started on Oct. 9 and Division II players will begin at 9 a.m. today. Championship rounds begin at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 11—and top singles and doubles teams will advance to a state tournament on Oct. 16 and 17 in Mason.  The Repository
