COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stark Parks announced that the nearly 100-year-old former Molly Stark Hospital will be demolished starting Oct.6 because its structure has deteriorated and contains cancer-causing asbestos—crews will move equipment this weekend and Gary Moderalli Excavating is the contractor. The park district secured an Ohio Brownfield Grant and local funds to cover nearly $2 million in costs, and demolition is expected to finish by the end of the year.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Big Lots has completed reopening over two dozen stores in Ohio, including a Canton location at 1336 Whipple Ave. Variety Wholesalers said grand opening events—starting at 9 a.m. Oct.30 with discount offers running through Oct.5—will kick off the new holiday season.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Canton Symphony Orchestra begins its 87th season with seven Masterworks concerts led by guest conductors — a plan that comes as the board prepares to search for a new music director. The season also offers pre-concert lectures and visual enhancements — features that promise a varied musical experience for local audiences.  The Repository

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Akron-Canton Airport will start nonstop American Airlines flights to Chicago on October 6. The airline will run two daily flights with a gate party at 6:30 a.m. for the first flight departing at 7:45 a.m.—adding a second Chicago route alongside United Airlines.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Whole CommUNITY Academy launched in North Canton on Sept 29 to offer workforce training and life skills for adults with developmental disabilities, and founder Beth Humbert said the person-centered program features 12 vocational areas with community employer visits (helping participants explore career choices).  The Repository
  • The temporary Stark County Main Library at 1020 Market Ave. N. will open on Oct. 6 at 9 a.m.—the branch will offer full services including Maker Studio and passport appointments while it operates for three years as the new Main Library is built on the old site. Since materials were moved from the closed location on Aug. 30, the branch now houses 140,000 items and the first 100 patrons will receive a prize during opening, promising a smooth restart of services.  The Repository
  • Stark Library will open its temporary location in downtown Canton on Oct. 6—offering residents access to its services until a permanent site is ready—providing an immediate resource for community readers.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting for the Nov. 4 election begins Oct.7 in Stark County, with in-person and absentee options available; voters must register by Oct.6 and provide a valid photo ID at the Stark County Board of Elections (3525 Regent Avenue NE in Canton). The ballot includes local races and tax measures on park levies and developmental disabilities, with in-person voting hours varying until Nov.2 and absentee ballots requested by Oct.28.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • In an OHSAA high school football game on Oct 3, the unbeaten Canfield Cardinals beat the Louisville Leopards 23—21 in a close match where Louisville's late drive fell short of a game-winning score. The game provided key turning points that helped Canfield improve its playoff position while challenging Louisville in the region.  The Repository
  • Local cross country runners Warner Parks, Andrew Hearn, Riley Dempsey, and Tateum Richard were named Stark County Runners of the Week by coaches after strong performances at recent championships and invitational meets — Parks posted a top-10 finish with a career-best time while Hearn, Dempsey, and Richard recorded season-best marks that helped their teams.   • The Canton McKinley Bulldogs defeated the North Canton Hoover Vikings at Memorial Stadium on Oct. 3—Hoover suffered its first Federal League loss as McKinley, led by Kyelin West, improved its record.
