BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fishers Foods will close its last store in Jackson Township on Oct. 14, ending 92 years of family-run service that began in Canton in 1933. The store at 5215 Fulton Drive NW will have a closing sale with markdowns of 30% or more starting today — the Fisher family said rising costs and online shopping led to the decision and the union is helping wind down operations.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Massillon native Scott McCauley, 62, from North Canton began acting after a chance break at a hardware store and has appeared in about 30 films including independent westerns and a Hollywood movie with Pierce Brosnan. He still works full-time in appliance sales and takes acting classes, and says his late-in-life career shift has brought him unexpected fun+he aims for bigger roles in the future.  The Repository
  • B.J. Novak, known for his role in The Office, spoke at Stark Library’s author series at Palace Theatre on Sept. 30 and shared humorous stories about his TV work and pranking Hillary Duff. He also discussed the smart upcoming Devil Wears Prada sequel and read from his children’s book—sparking laughter among the audience.  The Repository

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio's minimum wage will increase to $11 per hour for non-tipped employees and $5.50 per hour for tipped workers starting on Jan. 1, 2026 for businesses earning over $405,000 annually (up from $394,000) following a constitutional amendment. Employees at smaller companies and teens will continue to receive the federal rate of $7.25 per hour.  WKYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Officials announced that Perry High School's tennis courts will be removed to build a new middle school and the tennis teams will play at Reservoir Park starting in the 2026 boys' season—new courts will be constructed once the project is complete. Superintendent Nathan Stutz said prep work begins in March with construction starting in July while a committee explores grant opportunities for earlier court building if funds allow.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canton city officials approved economic incentives on Sept 29 to extend the tax increment financing agreement by 30 years, allow a PACE loan for energy improvements, and add a 1% resort fee — actions designed to protect the city's $8.5M in loans and prevent bankruptcy for Hall of Fame Village. Some council members noted concerns about the plan, but the measures offer multiple ways to help recover the funds.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Oct. 4, NAMIWalks Stark County will be held at Belden Village Mall at 4230 Belden Village St. NW where participants register at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.—attendees will visit a health fair that supports free mental health programs.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Jackson's Raffaele Scassa won the OHSAA Division I boys golf sectional title when he shot 1-under 71 at Tannenhauf on Sept. 30—his 34 on the back nine with five birdies helped the Polar Bears secure the team title. His performance also earned a spot at next week's district tournament at Pine Hills.  The Repository
  • The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its first Week 7 football computer ratings on Tuesday, Sept 23, showing standings for 708 schools across multiple divisions—these ratings will help decide which teams will join the state playoffs on Oct 26 before the championship games in Canton set for Dec. 4-6.  The Repository
  • Stark County voters can choose one girl and one boy from nominees representing Alliance, Canton South, Central Catholic, GlenOak, Fairless, Hoover, Lake, Lake Center, Marlington, Minerva, Perry and Tuslaw for the high school athlete of the week covering Sept. 22-28. The poll remains open until 5 p.m. on Oct. 2 and the winners will be announced Friday morning.  The Repository
  • After six weeks of the season, the rankings show North Canton Hoover’s Jack Andes and Alliance’s JR Jackson among the top football players while McKinley’s Kyelin West leads in rushing yards. West will face Hoover’s Carter Lukens in a key Federal League game this week — coaches must submit updated stats by noon on Mondays.  The Repository
