CRIME NEWS
- ➤ North Canton police are investigating the disappearance of 16-year-old Brady Hostettler, who was last seen on Sept. 25 during cross country practice wearing black running shorts and a black hat with no shirt—authorities ask anyone with information to call 330-499-5911. FOX 8
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Leon Bibb, Ohio's first Black prime time television news anchor, will speak at the Stark County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet on Oct. 17 at Kent State University Conference Center — the event features a reception at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the program at 7 p.m., with tickets costing $100 available until Oct. 6. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hoover-Jackson Marine Biology Program offers high school juniors and seniors from Stark County the chance to study ocean science every Wednesday evening from October through March at Hoover High School—with a field trip to Andros Island, Bahamas scheduled at the end of the course. A recent $20,000 gift created a scholarship that pays up to $2,200 of the $2,800 fee for students eligible for free or reduced lunch. The Repository
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Sept. 25, radar data showed that over 1.2 billion birds migrated over Ohio at about 2,000 feet at roughly 22 mph, setting a record for the season — weather radars captured the massive flocks as they journeyed at night. The birds left northern breeding grounds to find food and avoid predators as temperatures dropped. The Repository
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Ohio Department of Development revoked $9.77 million in tax credits for the Renkert Building and $2 million for the Granger Building in Canton because the projects failed to secure financing within 18 months. Developer Steve Coon said he will reapply for the credits this month and begin construction on the Century Plaza Hotel in December—planning to use nearby surface lots instead of a new parking garage. - ➤ Stark County cities are reviewing their cybersecurity programs as a new Ohio law requires local governments to adopt plans for cyber attacks and report incidents to the state + Canton said its system is compliant while Massillon, Alliance, Canal Fulton, North Canton, and Louisville update policies and software. Some cities must finish changes by Jan. 1 and are boosting IT training and spending to protect data + meet the state standards. The Repository

- ➤ Former Massillon Tigers coach Lee Owens met with past and present coaches at the Massillon Museum on Sept. 24 to discuss teamwork and leadership and to promote his new book—The Spirit of the Team. He signed copies for nearly 70 fans who celebrated the long tradition of Massillon football. The Repository
- ➤ Local high school football week 6 saw Canton McKinley, North Canton Hoover and Lake win their games while Massillon posted one of its lowest scores in nearly 20 years—standout performances from players like Jack Andes helped fuel the victories.
