COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The J.M. Smucker Co. is donating a 19,000-square-foot building, 30 acres of land, and $1 million to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank. The food bank will begin using the building in March 2026 when the retail store closes in January—helping local efforts to fight hunger.  FOX 8
  • Canton’s Domestic Violence Project will host several events in October for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month— a virtual lunch and learn on Oct. 1, Flash Purple Friday on Oct. 3 and Oct. 24, a Take Back the Night event at the Cultural Center for the Arts on Oct. 15, and a Happy Hour at Arcadia Bar and Grill on Oct. 22.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Chick-fil-A will open its fifth Stark County restaurant on Oct. 2 in North Canton at 1535 N. Main St.—doors open at 6:30 a.m. and guests in cow attire can get a free meal while owner Ry Adams plans to hire 120 people, donate $25,000 to local hunger relief, and join the Shared Table program.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Factory of Terror in Canton has added new scares such as snakes — clowns to its 100,000-square-foot haunted house to raise the scare level for visitors.  The Repository
  • Mural Fest returns downtown Canton on Sept. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. with nine new murals displayed across the city—artists from Stark County and beyond will be on site to share their work and engage with visitors.  The Repository
  • Ed Balint highlights a month of fun in Canton with Hall of Fame City Comic Con at Canton Memorial Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 27, Mural Fest downtown from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27, New Berlin Fest on Main St in North Canton from noon to 7 p.m. Sept. 27 and Oddmall’s Fairy Frolic on Sept. 28. He also notes a screening of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, drag bingo and other film shows at Canton Palace Theatre, a Canton Ballet performance on Sept. 28 and a Best Butterfly art exhibition on Sept. 30.  The Repository

FINANCE NEWS

  • AT&T agreed to a $177 million settlement after two alleged data breaches in 2024 that exposed private customer information. Eligible Ohio customers can claim up to $7,500 by November 18 by filing online or by mail — the settlement covers claims from either breach.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio residents can check their voter registration status online and register by local offices or mail until October 6 at 9 p.m. Early voting begins October 7 with in-person voting ending November 3 and mail voting ending November 4—stricter voter ID rules from 2023 may affect voters.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Violence in health care is rising and workers at Aultman in Canton say they face threats and physical harm while caring for patients. Hospitals are adding stronger security measures and officials will make tougher laws to punish offenders—staff hope this keeps them safe.  The Repository
  • Free seasonal flu shots for veterans will be available at all Northeast Ohio VA clinics starting Sept 27 until Oct 4 (8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept 27 and Oct 4 and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays) while additional shots can be received at in-network retail pharmacies and urgent care centers.  The Repository
