  • She Elevates women’s leadership group will host its annual awards gala on Oct. 9 at La Pizzaria—honoring local women and girls who serve as community leaders, including Stark County Family Court Judge Michelle Cordova, Stark State College President Para M. Jones, Monopoly Alliance member Saprina Allen, and students Khadijah Kebbeh and Stacia Jones. Guests will enjoy dinner and an awards ceremony as the group celebrates these trailblazers.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hever’s Family Meats, a family-owned butcher shop at 3307 Cleveland Ave NW, will close on September 27 after 52 years in Canton — owner Mark Hever is retiring and thanked customers for decades of support.  The Repository
  • Society Brands, a Canton-based e-commerce aggregator, launched a national marketing campaign with iHeartRadio to promote its 12 health and wellness brands—Vitality Now, Club Early Bird, and Clarifion. It also introduced a new talent collective that will let top influencers share in revenue and help boost brand growth.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canton City Council awarded $300,000 in opioid settlement funds to seven community programs for addiction prevention and recovery yesterday—half of the city’s $600,000 allotment. Mayor Sherer said the grants will support services like student education on naloxone use and outpatient withdrawal management and more funds may be given later.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FDA recalled over 150,000 pounds of frozen shrimp sold at Kroger and other stores in more than 30 states — including products sold near here — after tests showed they may be contaminated with the radioactive substance Cesium-137; consumers should dispose of the product or return it for a refund.  The Repository
  • A recent CDC report shows that kissing bugs—carriers of the parasite that causes Chagas—live in Ohio, though experts say the risk of catching the disease is very low. Health officials advise residents to seal home cracks and use screens to keep these insects out.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Week 5 of the OHSAA season saw Massillon upset the state's top-ranked team and top performers like JR Jackson, Corey Jacobs, Savior Owens, Jeremiah Thomas and Kyelin West shine on the field while Lake and Hoover remained unbeaten. The local power poll now ranks key big school teams and small school West Branch leads + Week 6 will bring matchups that test these teams further.  The Repository
  • Stark County high schools reported results for sports contests from September 22-27 — Minerva claimed the girls golf sectional title, Tuslaw advanced in boys golf, Lake Center Christian rallied past Rootstown in volleyball and Jackson won the Federal League title in girls tennis.  The Repository
