CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Former Carrollton Exempted Village Schools treasurer Amy Spears pleaded guilty on Sept. 18 to felony theft in office and records tampering—she stole over $27,000 from the district through fraudulent tuition reimbursements and a falsified check, and she is now barred from holding public office. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Later this month, many events will take place in Canton such as Minerva Oktoberfest on Sept. 27 at Municipal Park with live music, food trucks and games, the Quarry Artisan Market on Sept. 27 and 28 in Nimishillen Township with local crafts, and the Constitution Week Festival with a parade on Sept. 21 in Louisville. Other events include Oktoberfest at Jackson Township Amphitheater on Sept. 20, concerts by Kid Tigrrr and Dwight Yoakam on Sept. 25, a Beatles tribute in Hartville on Sept. 25, a Billy Joel tribute at Tozzi’s on Sept. 20, a Russ Hench art show on Sept. 20, and a movie premiere at Kings of Canton on Sept. 27 — giving residents many ways to enjoy local culture. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ohio resident Tyquawn Darrisaw started an online petition on Sept. 8 to change the state motto 'With God, all things are possible' over concerns it may favor one religion—and he plans to print flyers and gather more signatures if his goal of 1,000 is not reached. He argued that the current motto makes non-religious citizens feel excluded and challenges principles of government neutrality. FOX 8
- ➤ Canton councilman Darren Mayle faces backlash after he deleted Facebook posts that reposted criticism of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—he added 'Bye, bye!' to the reposts that many found disturbing. Mayle defended his actions and said he did not celebrate anyone's death while Plain Local Schools reviews the matter as he prepares for reelection in November—local voters remain strongly critical. - ➤ The SARTA board approved a severance package of about $100K for former CEO Kirt Conrad, who left in August and agreed not to work for another transit agency for six months in exchange for dropping legal claims. The board also approved a union contract for three years for roughly 160 workers that provides wage increases of 4% retroactive to August 1, then 3% the following year and 3% on August 1, 2027 + changes to health insurance premiums. - ➤ Aultman Hospital is offering free music therapy at its Timken Family Cancer Center to help ease anxiety for cancer and hospice patients with live guitar performances by music therapist Isabel Soehnlen. - ➤ McKinley High School senior Thomas Mankowski has been playing in the PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links since Sept. 17—an event that features top amateur players and PGA Tour Champions. Mankowski, who qualified at the First Tee National Championship at Notre Dame, hopes his performance will help him earn a spot on a Division I team. The Repository
