COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The North Canton Cares Pantry opened its new space at 5948 Mayfair Road this month to combine its warehouse and distribution center and serve families in need. Guests shop by assigned time slots (veterans 10 a.m. to noon, moms 1 to 3 p.m., and others 6 to 7:30 p.m.) and must show proof of residency as the pantry plans to expand its service area in the future.  The Repository
  • Sew4Service, a Northeast Ohio nonprofit teaching sewing, quilting, crochet and knitting, opened its Alliance chapter at The Commons at 405 S. Linden St. in June 2024. Founder Lucy Kulbago said (the chapter will expand store hours and needs more volunteers to support classes and local agency projects).  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Costco has recalled bottles of its Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene sold from April 25 to Aug. 26 because the unopened wine may shatter—customers should throw away the bottles and bring the refund letter to a warehouse for a full refund.  The Repository
  • A Texas company sued Hall of Fame Village for $267,895 plus interest for unpaid work at Carrie Underwood's Concert for Legends in August 2024—Hall of Fame Village faces added financial pressure as stockholders vote on a merger proposal today.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Walsh University in North Canton welcomed its largest freshman class since 2019 with 396 new students, bringing total enrollment to 2,157 across all programs. The school also reported its highest number of transfer students since 2019 (58 transfers with a 25% increase over the past five years).  The Repository
  • The Ohio Department of Education released its 2024-25 school report cards today with a new rating for college, career, workforce and military readiness that changed scores for several districts — Canton City School District received a 2.5 rating and needs support to meet state standards.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canton City Council discussed a proposed rule on Monday that would ban camping on public property as part of efforts to help the growing number of homeless residents. Mayor Sherer said the measure is meant to connect people to services rather than to punish them — a plan that has sparked local controversy.  FOX 8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Week 4 of high school football in Greater Canton ended with several teams — including unbeaten sides like North Canton Hoover and Louisville — recording strong wins and standout plays by athletes such as Jack Andes and Cam Carl. Local teams will face new challenges in Week 5 games on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.  The Repository
  • Corey Bojorquez of the Browns injured his right ankle on Sept. 14 when his punt was blocked by Baltimore's Jake Hummel — he returned to finish the game and said he will meet with trainers today to prepare for next week.  The Repository
  • The USA Today Network released its fourth Ohio High School Football Super 25 Poll for Week 5 today, ranking the top teams and featuring two Stark County schools including Canton McKinley—key for local fans as they follow the OHSAA season. The poll is compiled by sports writers using a points system from first-place votes to rank all twenty-five teams.  The Repository
