COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Brewster Fire Chief Chris Colucy has led the department for 10 years and is improving staffing and equipment—he also works as a locomotive engineer for CSX Railroad. Inspired by his family and his start in 1992, Colucy continues to serve the Brewster community with care.  The Repository
  • Not For Sale: One Step At A Time will host its seventh annual Community Freedom Summit on Sept. 20 at Walsh University’s Cecchini Center Arena from 9 a.m. to noon—Dr. Tony Talbott will speak on reducing demand to disrupt human trafficking in Stark County.  The Repository
  • Stark County has many upcoming community events including a free concert at Canal Fulton Library on Sept 16, a Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Centennial Plaza on Sept 27, candlelit concerts at Gervasi on Sept 26, wine and cheese at the First Ladies National Historic Site on Sept 18, and a Holiday Boutique on Oct 3 and Oct 4—local libraries, parks and organizations are also hosting programs and receiving grants for family support and substance use treatment.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Viega, a global leader in metal pipe fittings, opened its $178M facility in Mantua that built a carbon neutral plant producing two product lines and adding nearly 70 jobs with a new second shift. The company says the plant will earn LEED gold certification and plans to triple its size over the next ten years—responding to strong local demand.  WKYC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former McKinley students dedicated a mural in memory of late principal William Hunter at the Wm. Hunter Family Development Center on Mahoning Road NE. The mural took four weeks to complete and adds a QR code that gives more details — it honors his work as a teacher and mentor.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio lawmakers must submit a new congressional map by month's end—if they fail to win enough bipartisan support, the Ohio Redistricting Commission will take over and the process will be revisited by November while several other states are also considering similar moves.  FOX 8
