  • Carolyn Hess—founder and former director of Project REBUILD—died after a brief illness at age 85. She launched the program in 1999 to help young people finish high school and learn building trades in Canton.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hartville Hardware and Lumber, a legacy business with 78 years of history, will open a new 175,000-square-foot store in Middlefield on Sept. 12 to serve local customers and tradespeople. The store features an expanded lumber yard, a 3,000-square-foot buggy barn for the Amish, and a full paint shop — meeting the rising demand in the community.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Education reports that 53,051 students were homeschooled in the 2023-24 school year — a number exceeding the peak during the pandemic — and experts expect the upward trend to continue. Researchers note that the increase builds on a steady rise that started before COVID-19.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Sept. 30, 2025, Ohio law will require pornography websites to confirm users are at least 18 using photo IDs or transactional data—failure to meet the law may lead to civil lawsuits from the attorney general. The rule will join similar age-verification measures already adopted in 24 other states.  The Repository
  • At a Sept. 9 meeting, Jackson Township trustees voted to begin foreclosing on a three-bedroom bungalow on Lake O’Springs Ave NW for over $9,100 in unpaid taxes, with plans to resell it after foreclosure. The property—a 1.8-acre home appraised at $219,000—is owned by Tome Stambolziovski.  The Repository
