COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Honor Home — a transitional housing program for veterans — broke ground on a $3.5 million renovation at 2832 34th St. NE in Canton that expanded capacity from 16 to 25 residents and provided each with a private bedroom and bathroom. The project will improve staff efficiency and support Stark County veterans experiencing homelessness.  The Repository

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tuscarawas Valley freshman Mayson White was hurt on August 23 at Waynedale when a tackle broke his C4 and left him paralyzed—he had surgery at Akron Children’s Hospital that went well and his family said the other player did nothing wrong while the district will offer counseling and play its next game on August 29.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Timken Co. named Lucian Boldea as its new president and CEO on August 25, and he will start on September 1 to succeed interim leader Richard G. Kyle. The board said Boldea brings more than 25 years of industry experience from Honeywell and recently bought a home in Lake Township as he prepares to guide the company’s growth.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ohio schools must enforce a cellphone ban during class — a rule signed by Gov. Mike DeWine on June 30 — beginning Sept. 30, and allowed phone use is limited to learning, health reasons, or cases noted in an IEP or section 504 plan. Schools will meet the new instruction hour policy as the academic year begins.  WKYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • MetroHealth announced it will close six clinics in Northeast Ohio on Friday, Oct. 3 due to rising charity care costs — most services will move to larger centers and patients have been notified — and anyone with questions may call 216-MY-METRO.  FOX 8

  • USA Today Network Ohio released its first weekly Ohio High School Football Super 25 Poll for Week 2 today—voters statewide ranked teams regardless of division, with two Stark County teams earning spots among the top 25.  The Repository
