COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local pastor Rev. Raphael Cox turned 80 on Aug. 6 and recalled attending the historic March on Washington at age 18—an experience that shaped his lifelong service in Canton. His church hosts an annual Gold Jacket Hall of Fame event during Enshrinement weekend that brings NFL legends to inspire local youth.  The Repository

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Canton firefighters were called to a home on St. Elmo Avenue early Friday at 2:24 a.m. after a hungry dog turned on the stovetop burner while seeking food—residents were safe and a garden hose put out the fire with only minor damage.  WKYC

CRIME NEWS

  • A 77-year-old Canton man was arrested after he was accused of firing shots near a restaurant at Washington Square on Aug. 23 and now faces charges of aggravated menacing, discharging a firearm, vandalism and inducing panic after multiple 911 calls at 9:44 p.m.—police located the suspect in a blue Ford Mustang where a rifle and a .357 revolver matching witness descriptions were recovered.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Canton Township family traveled to Morocco in July through a sports diplomacy program where teen Carlo Virola served as a youth ambassador and mentor in basketball tournaments—visiting Casablanca, Tangier and the Medina in Marrakech to experience authentic local culture.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Work on the Stark County Jail renovation began in August and will last for two years at a total cost of $75 million — over $30 million has been awarded to local subcontractors. The project will add a new four-story housing unit and update the kitchen and clinic and is expected to be complete by the end of January.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • ReliaRide Medical Transportation, a nonprofit based in Canton, is helping meet the growing need for safe non-emergency rides for seniors, children with autism and people with disabilities—which builds on its strong community ties—and it remains alert to future funding changes.  The Repository
  • Dr. Paul T. Scheatzle is the medical director at Aultman Woodlawn’s rehab program in Stark County and has served for 20 years as a delegate on the Ohio Osteopathic House of Delegates and American Osteopathic Association House of Delegates (he also wrote The Journey in 2010 to guide readers on health and fitness).  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • High school cross country started last Saturday with local teams racing at meets in Salem Early Bird, GlenOak Golden Eagle, and Claymont. At Salem, Minerva won both boys and girls titles—freshman Anderson Scott led the boys race while all five girls finished in the top five—while at GlenOak, Perry’s Justus Detter won the boys race and Jackson clinched the girls title, and Northwest won the boys title at Claymont with wins by Luca Novakovic and Madelyn Begert.  The Repository
