- ➤ Today, the Artist 2 Artist exhibition opens at BZTAT Studios Gallery in downtown Canton where local professional artists pair with creators facing mental health challenges—artwork will be on display until Oct. 17. The Repository
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Osnaburg Local Schools launched its new website and will use ParentSquare — replacing Remind to share school updates with parents. The district waived fees, provided free breakfast and lunch for all students, and hired six new teachers for the 2025-26 school year. The Repository
- ➤ Minerva Local Schools named new Superintendent Mark Scott after retiring Gary Chaddock & upgraded its academic programs with a K-5 literacy curriculum and a middle school intervention program. The district launched a new website and app to improve parent communication and will expand high school STEM and elective courses to offer individualized learning pathways. The Repository
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Route 800 near East Sparta will close for erosion repairs from Aug. 18 until Aug. 22 (weather permitting) and drivers must follow a detour via state Route 212 to Interstate 77 to return to Route 800. Additional road projects in Stark County will cause lane restrictions on Route 44, Interstate 77 and Route 172. The Repository
- ➤ Canton city officials ask residents to share their climate change experiences in a 16-question survey that sets the city’s sustainability goals—responses will help shape the plan as the survey remains open through Aug. 31. The Repository
- ➤ Crews broke ground on Aug. 15 for a $75M renovation at Stark County Jail that will add a new clover-leaf housing unit and extra mental health beds for a modernized facility. The project will update the jail’s clinic and kitchen and is expected to finish by the end of January. The Repository
- ➤ Stark Metropolitan Housing Authority has not issued any Section 8 vouchers this year, leaving about 700 low-income families on the waiting list—overspending last year and a misunderstanding of HUD rules led to only 86% of funds being spent, and the agency will now screen applicants as it works toward a full spending goal by year-end. - ➤ Louisville High School senior running back Owen DiMarzio and junior defensive tackle Aden Norris won Stark County's preseason vote for top offensive and defensive high school football players for 2025 on August 15 — DiMarzio received 31.46% and Norris 50.29% of the 29,973 votes cast — setting expectations for the upcoming season.
