CRIME NEWS

  • A 76-year-old female inmate at Stark County Jail died Aug. 12 after feeling unwell following a court appearance—jail and clinic staff attempted resuscitation until she was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital and pronounced dead, with the case now under investigation.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuslaw Local Schools will raise breakfast prices from $2 to $2.25 and milk from 50 cents to 65 cents for the upcoming school year – rising food costs drove the increase. The district will also implement administrative changes by naming Adam McKenzie as associate superintendent, James Dubsky as high school associate principal, hiring deputy Caleb Geiger as resource officer, and bringing on 19 new staff members.  The Repository
  • Plain Local Schools is starting the new school year with new roles for familiar leaders—GlenOak High School principal Gayle Kimbrough became assistant superintendent and Brett Niarchos became head principal while the district moves to ParentSquare for all school messages. The district will host a Futures Conference on Sept. 3 from 6—8 p.m. to get community input on a facility master plan, and GlenOak High is partnering with Stark State to offer new career tech pathways in engineering and manufacturing.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canton City Council approved a new stormwater fee that will begin Jan. 1—$3.75 monthly for single-family homes, duplexes, and triplexes while larger properties are charged based on size up to a $325 monthly limit. The fee is expected to generate about $2 million a year to repair the city's aging drainage system.  The Repository
  • The Stark County Sheriff’s Office—Safe Communities Coalition will hold a memorial ceremony on Aug. 15 at 4:30 p.m. at the sheriff’s office on Atlantic Boulevard to honor Patricia J. Clark, a Canton native killed in a 2008 crash caused by an impaired driver, with remarks by her daughter, Kelli, followed by checkpoints as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.  The Repository

  • There are many places in the Akron-Canton area to kayak, canoe and paddleboard, and options include Wingfoot Lake State Park with hourly rentals and free classes, Canal Fulton Canoe Livery offering night trips on the Tuscarawas River, Walborn Reservoir in Stark County with affordable kayak rentals, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park plus Trailhead Canoe Livery in Massillon providing additional access to scenic waterways. Paddlers will find choices for beginners and experienced adventurers alike + all sites offer a way to enjoy nature and exercise.  The Repository
