COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Stark County has a busy schedule of events for the Canton region, including a fundraising gala on Aug. 23 in Richfield to honor Stewart’s Caring Place and a free Pearl Jam tribute concert on Aug. 15 in Canal Fulton. Other activities include a walking tour of West Lawn Cemetery in Canton on Sept. 6, along with free concerts, art shows, festivals and educational programs planned across North Canton, Lake TWP and Massillon — all designed to bring the community together.  The Repository

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Aug. 9, Canton firefighters battled a blaze on Kirby Avenue NE that significantly damaged a home — no injuries were reported as officials continue to investigate the cause.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Thomas Aquinas High School named Kevin T. Irvine as head principal while Malone University partnered with Habitat for Humanity East Central Ohio to launch the Learn & Earn program for students. The Canton Lincoln High School Alumni Association awarded scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $5,000 to over three dozen local graduates & recognized winners from several area high schools.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio will grant nearly $20 million to 21 nonprofits over the next two years to support expectant parents and caregivers through programs (Ohio Parenting and Pregnancy Program) that offer education, parenting classes and case management. Gov. Mike DeWine announced the awards from the state budget and the selected groups are expected to reach thousands of families statewide.  WKYC

  • Target is recalling 803 cases of Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies sold in Ohio and 20 other states for potential wood contamination— the voluntary recall was issued by Give and Go Prepared Foods Corp on July 22 and remains in effect.  The Repository
  • Canton-based Aultman will operate two new school health clinics in Tuscarawas County this year; one clinic will open at Tuscarawas Valley Local School District in Zoarville on the first day of class and the other at Claymont High School in Uhrichsville to serve students, staff, and local residents, with both funded by Gov. Mike DeWine’s Appalachian Children’s Health Initiative.  The Repository
