BUSINESS NEWS

  • Royal Docks Brewing Co. reached an agreement with Foxboro Fulton Center that permits the brewery to remain open at its Wales Avenue location until Sept. 1 if it pays $10,000 within 24 hours and meets other rental terms—owner John Bikis said the business is now moving forward with plans for its 10th anniversary and expansion amid ongoing legal and tax issues.  The Repository

CRIME NEWS

  • A Canton man was arrested on Aug. 7 during a Stark County raid at a home on 2811 Dorothy Avenue NE—agents seized over 2 pounds of cocaine, methamphetamine, pills and fentanyl along with nearly $5,000, vehicles and a handgun, and he now faces four drug-related felony charges.  The Repository
  • On August 6, a citizen in Canton reported finding a decomposing body near the former Lindsey's Restaurant at about 4:35 p.m.—the Stark County Coroner's Office later identified the body as 43-year-old Randal E. Cantwell after a cell phone and book bag were found nearby while the investigation continues.  The Repository

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio's wine industry now has 430 wineries that produced 6.3 million gallons last year and supports 45,000 jobs while contributing nearly $7.7 billion in economic activity. The industry attracts 1.29 million tourist visits with $246.41 million spent annually + state grants help growers expand vineyards.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwest High graduate Tamia Akers raised over $122,000 through GoFundMe to pay for college and law school—a fundraiser started by her 16-year-old sister, Xylaa Akers. The campaign received around 4,400 donations and surpassed its $64,000 goal, so Tamia will attend Howard University this fall.  The Repository

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Perseid meteor shower will peak on Aug. 12 to 13 but a waning gibbous moon will limit visible meteors to about 10 to 20 per hour instead of the usual 50 to 100. Local stargazers can head to dark sky parks like Fry Family Park, about 10 miles south of Canton, for a clearer view.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Since January 1, Ohio reported 326 cases of Legionnaires’ disease — including 298 hospitalizations — linked to Legionella in air conditioning systems and hot tubs. Health officials warn the illness poses a high risk for people over 50, smokers and those with weak immune systems as cases have been rising annually.  The Repository
