- ➤ A.S.P.I.R.E. Today will host a Welcome Back Community Extravaganza in Canton on Aug. 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. The event will give free book bags filled with school supplies for children in kindergarten through 12 — and will feature haircuts, a talent showcase, a mobile pet zoo and sports tournaments. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A man and a 20-year-old woman died on Aug. 5 after being struck by a Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad train—while they were walking from south to north on a trestle spanning State Route 212 and the Tuscarawas River—in northern Tuscarawas County. The Repository
- ➤ An 18-year-old woman drowned in a private pool in southwest Canton on Aug. 6 (family members were at the scene) as emergency responders attempted CPR before transporting her to Aultman Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Repository

- ➤ Neon Nights will take place on Friday, Aug. 8 and Saturday, Aug. 9 at Clay’s Resort Jellystone Park in North Lawrence—west of Canton—with a split lineup featuring classic rock acts like Foreigner on Friday and country artists like Brooks & Dunn on Saturday. Single-day passes start at $124 and wristbands offer swimming lake access while camping setups must be completed by 7 p.m. The Repository
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ For the Nov. 4 election in Stark County, filing for partisan candidates ended at 4 p.m. on Aug. 6 and write-in candidates can file until Aug. 25 while voters decide on a 1.6-mill levy request meant to prevent cuts at the Stark County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Longtime Canton Township trustee Christopher Nichols will not run for reelection and North Canton mayor Matthew Stroia runs unopposed—voters will face important local choices. The Repository
