COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 2,500 volunteers back the upcoming Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival (a key local event) by handling setups, vendor coordination, and cleanup to ensure smooth operations. Their work boosts tourism, local spending, and jobs across the community.  The Repository
  • KeyBank and the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced that a new event center will break ground this fall in Canton—construction will be completed in time for enshrinement events in 2027.  The Repository
  • The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Grand Parade will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 2 in downtown Canton and will feature a new Certified Angus Beef football player balloon — with the 2D Marine Aircraft Wing Band following — alongside Hall of Fame enshrinees and high school marching bands. The 62nd parade is expected to draw about 200,000 people as it travels along Cleveland Avenue to 25th Street NW.  The Repository

  • Stark County native Macy Gray played her first hometown concert at Canton Palace Theatre—she covered a song by Right Said Fred and impressed the audience with her Grammy-winning talent.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rebecca Stallman Southgate School will not open on Aug. 18 due to extensive smoke damage from a fire on July 23 — officials said the building will remain closed for months during cleanup. Students will attend classes at interim sites — with a start date around mid-September to be announced.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 31, HUD secretary Scott Turner visited the new Newton Family Apartments site at 1031 Tuscarawas St. W where Canton For All People and Woda Cooper Co. are building a 52-unit project with community space and playground—this project, which received a $2.1 million city allocation and mixed funding, is set to open next year—.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pat McAfee, a popular ESPN sports figure, kicked off the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival Fan Fest with a live broadcast outside the Pro Football Hall of Fame on July 31—drawing a crowd that braved rain to watch him and other stars.  The Repository
  • The Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers played the NFL preseason Hall of Fame Game at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on July 31 in Canton. Both teams returned to Canton for the first time since the 1990s—honoring the 2025 Hall of Fame Class with a display on the field—while key plays like a 60-yard interception defined the game.  The Repository
  • Hall of Famer Eric Allen paid tribute to Browns cornerbacks Hanford Dixon and Frank Minnifield by studying their techniques and pretending to be them on Sunday — his Hall of Fame enshrinement is set for Saturday as part of the class of 2025.  The Repository
