ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early July 22, a fire broke out at an apartment building on 800 Fifth St. NW causing one resident to be taken with non-life-threatening injuries to Aultman Hospital — firefighters quickly controlled the blaze and confined damage to a single room with minor water damage in nearby units.  The Repository
  • Early Tuesday morning, Canton firefighters responded to a blaze at a three-story apartment on 5th Street NW that forced residents to evacuate & sent one person to the hospital with non–life-threatening injuries while damages were estimated at $7,000.  FOX 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stark Library will launch its Dr. Audrey Lavin Speaking of Books Author Series Season 11 with B.J. Novak on Sept. 30 and Marlee Matlin on Nov. 6 at the Canton Palace Theatre, while Col. Terry Virts will speak at the First Christian Church Auditorium on March 19, 2026 and Derek Hough on April 23, 2026 — all with free ticket options available.  The Repository
  • Yesterday marked the 55th anniversary of an Ice Age mastodon discovery nicknamed Bondo Betty; local developer Roger DeVille & his crew unearthed the nearly complete skeleton during an apartment project in Plain Township, and it is now on display at the William McKinley Presidential Library & Museum.  The Repository
  • Stark County offers many options beyond football for residents and visitors during the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival. People can visit art museums, history sites and local shops plus enjoy wine tasting and flea markets in the Canton-Massillon area.  The Repository

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio's sales tax holiday will run from midnight on Aug. 1 until 11:59 p.m. on Aug. 14 and will let shoppers buy most items costing $500 or less—this includes food, clothing, electronics, and even qualifying Amazon orders. Gov. Mike DeWine said the extended holiday supports families during back-to-school and meets important household needs.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union Local High School is the first school in the U.S. to receive a retired Air Force F-16 Thunderbird Jet, which will be permanently displayed to honor military service and school pride. The jet was awarded on June 3 and will arrive for installation in spring as a project funded solely by community donations.  FOX 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gerrie Cotter was chosen as Perry Township’s new administrator by a 3-0 vote on July 15 and began work on July 16 to help update the township website and coordinate with department heads—she moved from Westerville to be closer to her son at Kent State.  The Repository
  • Today, Timken Place SW at Bolivar Road in Canton closes for 18 days as city crews repair the road and detours are posted.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local voters can cast their ballots for the 2024-25 Stark County High School Boys Coach of the Year by Thursday at 5 p.m.—the contest features nominees from Lake Center, Louisville and Perry—and the winner will be announced Friday morning.  The Repository
