Good morning, Canton. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 18th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Kirksey, Young and Hawkins families held their 85th reunion in Alliance on July 11-12 with over 450 relatives gathering at Silver Park for a cookout and an afterparty in Canton. City council had earlier named July 12 as Kirksey-Young-Hawkins Families Day to honor the event’s long history and ties.  The Repository
  • A panel of appeals judges upheld two small claims rulings that found Richard and Mary Smith liable for feeding squirrels that damaged a neighbor’s boat and truck on Chippewa Avenue NW in Jackson Township. The court ruled that the continued feeding created an absolute nuisance — a decision backed by trial testimony — while one judge dissented over the link between the food and the damage.  The Repository
  • A 1976 Chevy Silverado once driven by Elvis Presley is on display today at the Jackson Township Car Show at North Park. Phil Dimos of Black Horse Motors said he paid about $75,000 for the truck + it carries original paperwork and is available for sale at the event.  The Repository
  • The 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival will begin this Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with a Community Parade near the Canton Memorial Civic Center and will continue through early August with balloon launches, a 5K race, sports clinics, fan fests, fireworks and concerts at local sites including Kent State University at Stark campus and Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium — the schedule gives detailed times and sponsors for each event.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the July 16 meeting, Jackson Township trustees rejected a bid of just over $2,000 for the sale of the township-owned property on Parkford Street N because they seek a higher offer to cover demolition and cleanup expenses — the property was acquired after foreclosure and back taxes were due.  The Repository
