COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ohio’s first homeless shelter for women veterans and their families opened in Stark County on June 12, with two renovated buildings that house up to 16 residents. The facility at the Honor Home campus is set to offer housing and support for women veterans and their dependents — addressing a key local need.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Royal Docks Brewing Co. Foeder House + Kitchen in Oakwood Square closed on June 12 because of a legal dispute with an investor and is now listed for sale as a turnkey operation with 5,685 square feet; production and retail have been consolidated at the Jackson Township location where business continues at regular hours.  The Repository

CRIME NEWS

  • A Stark County sheriff’s deputy was fired after shooting an aggressive dog on June 10 in Canton when deputies responded to a 911 call reporting stray dogs that had bitten residents (another dog was injured and underwent surgery) as authorities said he failed to follow proper protocols and the dog's owner was cited for allowing the animals to run free.  FOX 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • For June 2-8, voters named Anna Keller from Perry and Austin Coy from Central Catholic as Stark County High School Athlete of the Week winners; Keller (50.92% votes) played softball and Coy (76.15% votes) played baseball. Their awards honor strong school sports efforts and the program will return in the fall.  The Repository
  • Larry Tausch is expected to be named Canton Local Schools’ new superintendent when the board meets at 6 p.m. June 16 to approve his appointment & he will succeed Brett Yeagley while bringing nearly 30 years of education experience from roles including principal at Northwest High School.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A section of state Route 44 in Marlboro Township will close on June 23 for culvert replacement — affecting local traffic until early July — and drivers must follow a detour using state Route 619, state Route 43, and state Route 224.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lake Center Christian will face Bloomdale Elmwood today at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in the OHSAA Division VI state semifinal as the Tigers (27—4) aim to be the first from their school to reach the final four while the Royals (22—8) seek a second semifinal appearance; the winner will advance to Sunday's state championship at Canal Park in Akron. This matchup sets the stage for a high-energy contest that many local fans are eager to see.  The Repository
