COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton awarded more than $1.5 million in grants for early 2025 to support community health, education, housing and social services. The funds will address immediate community needs, build nonprofit capacity and promote systemic change with awards ranging from $7,700 to $375,000.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tyler Schmidt and Shawn Decker recently opened Foundry Diecast in a North Canton shopping plaza, offering thousands of collectible toy cars from brands such as Hot Wheels and Pop Race. They renovated a 1,800 square-foot showroom + collectors from Toledo, Pittsburgh and beyond have already visited the store.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Canton region will host several Juneteenth events to mark the end of slavery, including a community festival at Nimisilla Park on June 14 and 15, a museum event with children’s story time on June 18, and a talent show in Alliance on June 19. Other events include a historical celebration at Hale Farm and Village on June 19 and a community celebration with a parade, football tournament, picnic and fireworks from June 20 to 22.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Stark County educators and over 1,000 community members gathered at Canton Memorial Civic Center on June 10 to protest proposed state budget cuts that could force schools to reduce staff and programs—local officials warned that these measures might weaken public education and urged residents to vote to protect their schools.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Supreme Court will review North Canton's ordinance that requires rental unit inspections after CF Homes appealed the mandate as invasive. A panel and the Stark County Common Pleas Court upheld the law—arguing it protects public health and safety.  The Repository
  • At a public hearing on June 9, residents in North Canton urged City Council to keep the overnight parking ban to ensure emergency vehicles have clear access—many argued that the ban prevents cars from cluttering narrow streets and obstructing driveways. Council will consider new guidelines for police waivers at an early July meeting to address concerns raised by both supporters and opponents of the rule.  The Repository

  • Reds manager Terry Francona returned to Progressive Field and was greeted with a special tribute from the Guardians—he kissed Christian Encarnacion-Strand's bat before the cleanup hitter gave his team a 4—3 lead that clinched the Ohio Cup, a title they had not claimed since 2014.  The Repository
