- ➤ Penn Station East Coast Subs opened a new location yesterday in Massillon at 1139 Lincoln Way E near Akron Children's Pediatrics, and owner Robert Nelson said the shop is part of the franchise's plans to expand in Stark County. The Repository
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two people died after a speeding Volkswagen Golf struck a Nissan Altima near 4th Street NW and Wertz Avenue NW on Saturday, June 7—Canton police said the driver of the Golf, Christopher Siple Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene while Dai’sha Wise, driving the Altima, later died at Aultman Hospital. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Juneteenth will be celebrated on June 19 to mark the end of slavery, with federal services such as post offices and banks closing while grocery stores and Canton trash pickup run as normal. Several events in Stark County include a Black History Museum celebration in Canton on June 18, a community festival at Nimisilla Park on June 14 and 15, and a Jubilee Dinner in Alliance on June 22 — each with its own schedule and fees. - ➤ Gospel Joins Symphony, a concert of orchestral and gospel music, will take place at 7:30 p.m. June 13 in Umstattd Hall at 2331 17th St. NW in Canton. The event is sponsored by the W. - ➤ Stark Parks dedicated a new bridge on the Sippo Valley Trail west of the Bison trailhead using repurposed materials and salvaged concrete. The bridge, built entirely by the park crew with support from Friends of Stark Parks, improved the aging trail system while saving taxpayer money — showing a cost-effective approach to public works. - ➤ Canton City Public Health said a mosquito trapped on the 2200 block of Sandwith Avenue SW tested positive for West Nile virus. The department is spraying adult mosquitoes from June 9 to June 18 and will continue larvicide treatments while advising residents to use insect repellent and remove standing water (to help lower the risk of infection).
