COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Canton held a Memorial Day parade yesterday to honor fallen soldiers and veterans — the event joined parades in Stark County that celebrated patriotism with flags and remembrance.  The Repository

CRIME NEWS

  • Kamayah Gisentaner, a 16-year-old, has been missing from Canton since May 15th and anyone with information is asked to call 330-649-5800.  FOX 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Massillon Museum will team up with Expanding Circles Collective LLC for an open mic poetry event on May 31 at 2:30 p.m.-attendees can read poetry and join a brief writing workshop in the Fred F. Silk Community Room Gallery. The free event welcomes all ages at 121 Lincoln Way East in downtown Massillon.  The Repository
  • A local mystery emerged when a letter with a Canton postmark may be from Dorothy—the war widow featured in 'Summer of '42—prompting author Herman Raucher to suggest she once lived in our area. He said her genuine letter stood apart from many fakes and left questions about her true identity.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alliance Middle School has launched a new Garden Club where students learn science by planting and caring for produce under the guidance of science teacher Nathan Morrison — the club receives support from the Stark County Health Department and a donation from the Grove family — and it may later supply produce for the high school's culinary arts program.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, many local stores such as Aldi, Walmart, Target and Kroger operated normal or limited hours while trash pickup in Canton was delayed and banks and the post office were closed for the holiday. The stock market did not open and carriers like FedEx and UPS halted regular service — the next federal holidays are Juneteenth on June 19 and Independence Day on July 4.  The Repository

  • Senior Dylan Wiles of GlenOak was named county player of the year on the All-Stark County boys tennis team after he won the doubles championship with teammate Jack Slay on May 24 and both are No. 1 seeds in the state tournament in Wooster. The roster also includes players such as Lake’s Carson Craig, McKinley’s Elijah Corrin, Jackson’s Larson Sutula, and Jackson’s Kahan Patel — selections made by a panel of coaches — who impressed in spring matches.  The Repository
