COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Janelle Lee was named permanent CEO of YWCA Canton on Tuesday, May 19, after serving as interim leader since December. Board chair Latrice Virola says Lee has built strong community partnerships & improved programs that will guide the organization's future.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hall of Fame Village hired S&L Hospitality (a Wisconsin-based firm) to manage its indoor water park, Gameday Bay, which will open in spring. The water park will feature over 100,000 sqft of attractions at the football-themed destination along Interstate 77.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The artwork of nine local high school students was selected for the Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition and is on view online (from over 6,000 statewide entries) with pieces from GlenOak, Canton South, Perry, and Jackson high schools.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stark County held a Peace Officers Memorial Day ceremony on May 15 in Canton to honor officers who died in the line of duty, with Sheriff Weisburn and local chiefs reading names from guard Homer J. Stone (1902) to patrolman Sean VanDenberg (2021).  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Health reports rising tick activity statewide as spring warms, with American dog tick, blacklegged tick, and lone star tick common in grassy or wooded areas; Canton residents should use repellents and check for ticks (which can carry Lyme disease and other infections) when outdoors.  The Repository

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Bev Shaffer explores Stark County’s ice cream stops today and highlights unique flavors + local favorites for dessert lovers.  The Repository

  • Voting is open for Stark County High School Athlete of the Week for May 11-17 (one boy and one girl will be honored) with nominees selected by local sports staff. Votes close at 5 p.m. Thursday and winners will be announced Friday morning on CantonRep.com.  The Repository
