  • Jessica Peternelj-Monea will become executive director of Stark County TASC on June 1 after serving as clinical director for five years and working with retiring director David A. Willis while the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank honored local volunteers during National Volunteer Week and ArtsinStark elected new board members Alison Matas Smith and Chris Auman. Upcoming events include the Ribs Burnoff from May 23 through May 25 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame campus, concerts at Nash Family Jackson Amphitheater on May 23 and May 30, a Memorial Day Weekend Flea Market in Lake Twp, a 3D Print Design class at North Canton Public Library on May 28, the HERO 5K Run/Walk on May 26 in Perry Twp, a Brown Bag Lunch at Massillon Museum on May 27, and DOT seeking comments on planned bridge replacements in Paris and Jackson townships with work starting fall.  The Repository

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Beer Serves America's 2024 report shows the beer industry provided a $17.4 billion boost to Ohio's economy, supporting 82,590 jobs and contributing $1.8 billion in taxes. The study also finds Ohio ranks sixth nationwide, highlighting how the sector drives work and revenue across the state—an important note for our local markets.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stark Area Regional Transit Authority in Canton has led zero-emission bus innovation since 2010 by replacing diesel buses with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles—financed by state and federal grants. Its success supports calls to preserve the 45V tax credit so Ohio can boost clean hydrogen production and create jobs.  The Repository
  • Canton and the Ohio Department of Transportation are asking locals for feedback on two projects (the Cherry Avenue SE improvement and the Fourth Street SE bridge repair). The Cherry Avenue project will add a walking path and new lights with comments due by May 28, and the Fourth Street bridge project will start in summer 2026 with input accepted until May 25 (detours will be in place).  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northeast Ohio health care systems are using artificial intelligence to cut down on paperwork—helping doctors spend more time with patients. Cleveland Clinic began an AI scribe in February and will roll it out system-wide later, while MetroHealth picked an AI platform to improve billing accuracy—both with human oversight.  WKYC
  • Allergy season in Stark County is getting worse as warm weather makes trees, grass, and weeds release more pollen, and experts expect symptoms to peak in May. Dr. Lindsay Meade said nasal sprays and weather apps (which show high pollen days) can help people manage their symptoms.  The Repository
