  • Today, volunteers can join the inaugural David W. Schultz Day of Service at Massillon Cemetery from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.—the event honors his more than 40 years of service to the community and was established by local leaders and his family.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stark County native Karissa Ella will release her new song 'Hall of Fame' on May 30 and perform at The Country Fest at 4 p.m. on June 13 at Clay’s Resort Jellystone Park near Canal Fulton. She will also perform at 8 p.m. on July 11 in Massillon—her song pays tribute to Canton’s blue-collar heritage.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 158 by a vote of thirty to two—sending it to the Ohio House for a policy that would ban student cellphone use during the school day by Sept. 1 except for health concerns or emergency situations. Stark County Sen. Jane Timken introduced the bill and Gov. Mike DeWine backed it while two state senators opposed it.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting May 19, motorists in Stark County will face lane restrictions on Tuscarawas Street W and Market Avenue N in Canton for resurfacing work expected to finish in July, and on Lincoln Way W in Massillon with work ending in late August. Ramps at the I-77 and State Route 800 interchange will be closed through early June — a detour via Shepler Church Avenue, Dueber Avenue and Mill Street SW is in place, with more details available from the Canton Engineering Department at 330-489-3370.  The Repository

  • Northwest's Logan Allman finished his hurdles sweep at the PAC-7 Track and Field Championships by winning the 300 hurdles—boosting his status as the meet's top hurdler.  The Repository
  • Hoover’s athlete Mahlina McFadden, a lacrosse player who scored five goals in key wins, received 46.91% of the 29,647 votes cast while Sandy Valley’s baseball player Drew Graybill received 69.60% of the votes for Stark County Athlete of the Week for May 5-11.  The Repository
  • Andrew Hearn led Fairless' boys 3,200 relay team to win at Thursday's PAC-7 Track and Field Championships — officials said the strong finish boosts the team's momentum for upcoming meets.  The Repository
