COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 13th annual Operation: Flags of Freedom Memorial Day service will be held at Perry High School on May 23 at 9 a.m. More than 300 U.S. flags will be up from May 22 through the weekend, and volunteers are needed at the school and Calvary Cemetery (supporting local veterans).  The Repository
  • Elaine Sukosd Park opened in Osnaburg Township (at 1600 Broadway Ave. NE) yesterday as the community’s first public park; the site features a gravel trail loop, lighting and grass funded by a $150,000 state grant, and trustees plan more improvements with a dedication ceremony scheduled for June.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Eyes of Freedom traveling memorial featuring oil portraits honoring 23 military members will be on display from May 19 to 22 in room M100 at Stark State College, with an opening ceremony set for 10 a.m. May 19 and a veterans resource fair planned for May 21. This free exhibit commemorates soldiers from the 2005 conflict.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school seniors in the area will graduate starting May 14 with Minerva Local Schools leading the ceremonies and events continuing through May 31. The schedule covers details like times, locations, tickets and livestreams at places including auditoriums and stadiums — ensuring every family can plan to celebrate this milestone.  The Repository
  • Local officials launched Motorcycle Ohio, a rider safety course at KSU Stark and the Sheriff's Office; the program costs $75 and offers 12 hours on-bike + four hours classroom to help riders earn a 60-day BMV skill test waiver. Courses run through fall.  The Repository

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Save Ohio Parks (a nonprofit protecting parks) called for a moratorium on new data centers until they meet renewable energy requirements, arguing the facilities can help boost clean energy in the state. Lawmakers will need to address these concerns as opposition grows statewide.  The Repository

  • Canton readers can vote by 5:00 p.m. Thursday on the Stark County High School Athlete of the Week, with one boy and one girl selected based on May 4-10 performances; winners will be announced Friday morning on CantonRep.com.  The Repository
