COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ystark! at the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Canton Repository announced 20 Twenty under 40! honorees, recognizing young leaders for achievements in Stark County. Profiles begin May 26 with an awards ceremony at 6 p.m. June 25 at the Cultural Center for the Arts.  The Repository
  • The USS Cleveland will arrive today at 11 a.m. at the Port of Cleveland to kick off a week of family events that include stops at Vermilion, Avon Lake, and more. The commissioning ceremony is set for May 16 at North Coast Yard (marking a historic first for Ohio warships).  WKYC

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burlington opened its Columbus store on May 8 at 4600 W Broad St and will open new stores in St Clairsville and Willoughby Hills on May 29 and in Cincinnati on June 19. The expansion updates store designs with wider aisles and bold signage.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Timken Alumni Association will host its spring dance on May 22 from 7 to 11 p.m. at Chateau Michele (2231 44th St. NW) to honor three alumni by presenting Service Awards. Current members are admitted free while guests pay $20, and reservations are required by May 17.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A memorial service in downtown Canton on May 8 honored 19 Stark County law enforcement officers and two police dogs who died in the line of duty.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Giant Eagle announced a recall of roasted turkey items purchased since April 28 due to possible metal fragments (no illnesses were reported). Customers can return the product with a receipt for a refund.  The Repository
  • Canton Communication and Dispatch Center director Rebecca Turney is planning to donate her kidney to Canton police Sgt. Kyle Slone to help improve his health. The planned donation highlights a remarkable personal commitment to life (details on timing are forthcoming).  The Repository

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Newton Family Apartments by Canton For All People have opened and offer new housing for local residents. A video tour shows the modern features of the complex.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • On May 8, Jackson won its ninth consecutive Federal League boys tennis title, and McKinley's Elijah Corrin earned Player of the Year honors after an undefeated season — players now await upcoming sectional and district tournaments leading to the state event at Lindner Family Tennis Center.  The Repository
  • Stark County high school track and field season best performances have been compiled through May 6 and include top personal records in events from shot put to relays across several local schools (Louisville, Fairless, and others). These results are based on electronically timed events.  The Repository
  • Tuslaw’s Hadley Porter (softball) and Hoover’s Samuel Baker (track) earned Stark County Athlete of the Week for April 27-May 3 after 29,692 votes were cast, with Porter receiving 60.59% and Baker securing 39.52%.  The Repository
