COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Civic leaders and Heritage Ohio’s Main Street program evaluated downtown North Canton on May 5 with a public meeting at Dogwood Park to discuss adding restaurants, shops and more events (neighbors hope this sparks business and community growth).  The Repository
  • Several southeast Canton streets will be closed from 8 to 11 a.m. on May 30 for the Habitat for Humanity Southeast Stride 5K Walk and Run (including 13th, 14th, Willet, and Housel Avenues).  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Massillon's Summer Concert Series begins on June 11 at Duncan Plaza with DJ's Rock n' Roll Band & runs free until Aug. 13; the lineup includes local favorite LaFlavour on July 3 during Independence Day and performances span 1950s hits to classic rock.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Early returns show Plain Local’s bond issue for three new elementary schools is trailing as voters decide on school funding measures in multiple districts. Canton Local’s 10.8-mill levy renewal favors continuation (196 yes to 136 no) while Louisville’s 4-mill levy nears approval, with results reported May 5 after polls closed.  The Repository

FINANCE NEWS

  • No one took the $20 million top prize in the Monday, May 4 Powerball drawing, and the jackpot is now estimated at $30 million with a cash value of $13.5 million for today's drawing at 10:59 p.m. (Tickets cost $2 with an extra $1 for the Power Play).  The Repository

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Canton-Massillon housing market was ranked third best in the country on May 1 per the latest WSJ/Realtor.com report (citing a 4.4% unemployment rate and $239,900 median home price), with Akron ranked sixth (based on similar figures).  The Repository

  • Voting is live for Stark County High School Athlete of the Week covering April 27-May 3, with one girl and one boy chosen from nominees at schools including Alliance and Central. Votes close 5 p.m. Thursday, May 7, and winners will be announced Friday morning on CantonRep.com.  The Repository
