- ➤ MentorStark named Cassie Ausperk as its new executive director effective May 25 following founder Laurie Moline's planned retirement (announced May 1). Ausperk, who is the advancement coordinator, will work to expand mentoring programs in the Stark County community. The Repository

- ➤ Timken Co. announced on May 1 that it is selling its belts business to Denver-based Gates Industrial, with the deal expected to close in the third quarter + the Timken belts plant in Jackson Township will close because it was not included in the sale. The Repository
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Canton Palace Theatre began phase two of its $19 million renovation on May 1, adding stage space, loading docks, new dressing rooms and a second lobby (the project will finish late 2027 while allowing fall and holiday shows to continue) while preserving its historic charm. The Repository
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sts. Philip & James School in Canal Fulton opened a 50-year-old time capsule on its 150th birthday today; festivities showcase the school’s history (a celebration inviting community participation). The Repository
- ➤ The Canton City Board of Education will vote on May 11 on whether to close Gibbs Elementary to cut a projected budget deficit. If the proposal passes, over 360 students will join Timken Elementary (and others will move to nearby schools) as part of a spending reduction plan. The Repository
- ➤ Kent State and Stark State College leaders responded to a proposed consolidation of Ohio’s public university system by emphasizing growth and local workforce success.
