- ➤ A candlelight vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of Frank Tyson’s death is being held today in the Crenshaw Park parking lot (1400 Sherrick Road SE) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. after he died April 18th while in police custody following a struggle with officers. The Repository
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The West Branch Local Board of Education approved a new supplemental contract for varsity girls basketball coach Walt DeShields on Wednesday night, reversing a March 31 decision to let him go. DeShields, who has coached for 20 years (379 wins, seven division titles, and two state final four appearances), said he could not wait to get back in the gym (after weeks of community uncertainty) as preparations for next season begin. - ➤ Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank CEO Dan Flowers warned that last week's vote on House Bill 96—if it holds—could hurt Ohio farmers, increase food waste, and lower the nutritious food available at the food bank. Lawmakers are working to restore funding as these cuts may reduce local food supplies by about 10% in 2025. The Repository
- ➤ Residents in North Canton using the city's aggregation program will see their rate jump from 4.34 cents to 8.14 cents per kilowatt-hour next month as the current contract expires. City officials said letters from AEP will arrive soon + customers can choose fixed+variable rates starting in June. The Repository

- ➤ Perry High School swimmers led the 2024-25 All-Federal League swim teams—senior Sophie Baker won girls swimmer of the year and freshman Talan Smith won boys swimmer of the year. Baker was a four-time state qualifier who finished second in the 50-yard freestyle while Smith won the 200 freestyle at sectionals—coaches Doug Nist and Richard Vaughn were named coach of the year. - ➤ The Browns named veteran Joe Flacco as their opening-day starter this fall to boost competition in the quarterback room while keeping their draft plans unchanged. GM Andrew Berry said the signing is meant to add experience and challenge the likes of Kenny Pickett or a future rookie during training camp — a strategy to develop multiple quarterback options.
