CRIME NEWS

  • A student at Southway Elementary brought a magazine with ammunition to the school on Wednesday and allegedly said they had a firearm—students promptly reported the incident and staff activated safety protocols while police confirmed no weapon was found and began an investigation.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joseph D. Schauer, a Stark County business leader and chair for ArtsinStark’s Campaign for the Arts, urged local leaders to invest in the arts to boost economic growth and improve education and quality of life. He said that strong support for art programs builds a vibrant community — an effort calling on businesses and other community leaders to join in.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers, including Rep. Steve Demetriou and Rep. Bill Roemer, re-introduced House Bill 115 which would eliminate the federal E-Check requirement for cars four years old or older in seven northeast Ohio counties—if the Environmental Protection Agency later approves a personal attestation form as meeting clean air standards, the bill has not yet been heard.  FOX 8
  • The Ohio Power Siting Board will decide today whether to allow Stark Solar to build a 150-megawatt solar farm in Washington Township. The $200 million project may bring tax revenue and power for over 27,000 homes — though local officials and residents oppose the plan.  The Repository
  • Homeowners in Canton can pick up free smoke detectors at Fire Station No. 1 at 110 Seventh St. SW between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday — they must bring a valid photo ID and a utility bill or mail showing the installation address, and landlords are not eligible.  The Repository

  • The Browns may draft Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter as the No.2 overall pick; he is a rare non-quarterback known for his skills as both a cornerback and receiver. Analysts say the team has struggled with past Heisman winners—raising cautious hopes that his unique play style will help change the record for the franchise—while local fans in Canton keep a close eye on his selection.  The Repository
