COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Austin-Bailey Health and Wellness Foundation approved $161,000 in grants to 17 nonprofits, with 12 Stark County groups receiving between $1,300 and $30,000 for health projects in Canton, Massillon and Canal Fulton — the awards will fund salaries, equipment and program costs — and nonprofits should call the foundation office at 330-580-2380 before May 27 to discuss future requests.  The Repository
  • Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired will host an accessible beeping egg hunt Saturday at Stark State College, 6200 Frank Ave NW from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The event is free for children who are blind or visually impaired and their siblings and is part of the center's adaptive sports and leisure programs.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brown Local Schools and Minerva Local Schools will have new superintendents effective Aug. 1 (Brown names Danielle Hawk as superintendent) and (Minerva appoints Mark Scott to replace retiring Gary Chaddock). The leadership changes were announced during spring break and set the stage for both districts' upcoming academic year.  The Repository

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Jackson Township Courtyard by Marriott hotel, which defaulted on a 2019 loan, will be sold at a Stark County Sheriff's online auction on April 14 at 10 a.m. — with a minimum bid of $6.2 million — while it continues operating under a court-appointed receiver.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Guardians began their season against the Royals in Kansas City at 4:10 p.m.—Tanner Bibee was too sick to pitch so Ben Lively started in his place—and the Royals countered with Cole Ragans as the game set the stage for a close AL Central race.  The Repository
  • The Ohio Prep Sports Media Association announced the All-Ohio Boys Basketball Teams for Division I, II and III on Thursday with local honorees including Louisville’s coach Tom Siegfried named Division III Coach of the Year and first team forward Brayden Gross — a key contributor from the state champion group. Massillon's Chris Knight and Perry's Luke Wolf also earned team honors along with Canton McKinley's Reed Sims Jr. — marking a strong display of local basketball talent.  The Repository
  • The All-Inter-Valley Conference named the winter high school sports teams for 2024 to 2025 in boys basketball, girls basketball, boys bowling, girls bowling and wrestling. The lists include first and second teams along with player and coach awards from schools like East Canton, Buckeye Trail and Malvern—details were released by the conference.  The Repository
