CRIME NEWS

  • At 3:29 a.m. today, the Regional Emergency Dispatch Center issued a missing persons alert for 58-year-old Vicki Linn Bell after she refused help on Friday on Portage Street NW in North Canton; authorities say she has bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and may be dangerous (she is 5-foot-5, has brown hair, broken teeth, and was seen in unclean clothes).  The Repository
  • On Monday evening, a 33-year-old woman said her daughter's father stabbed her with a machete on the 600 block of W.C. Henderson Avenue NE and she went to a neighbor's home on the 1000 block of Lippert Avenue NE for help, while police took the suspect into custody after finding the weapon on his SUV — the suspect had taken her 1-year-old child to a relative's home.  The Repository
  • A man was shot late Monday night at the Old Landmark Tavern, 5224 Ridge Ave.—SW in Canton Township and was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital—officials said his condition remains unknown.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Akron Zoo and ArtsinStark are teaming up on a unique art exhibition that features artwork made by zoo staff, including a jaguar’s play toy transformed into art. The free exhibit, titled Wonderfully Wild: Art By and For Animals, will open April 8 at the Cultural Center Gallery in downtown Canton and run until May 11—an opening reception is set from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 17.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Canton Christian School is preparing to add more grades next school year—photos taken on Feb. 27th show teachers and students busy in classrooms as they work on plans for the expansion.  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Canton City Council unanimously approved a 2025 budget of $343 million — a 6% increase from last year — to fund essential services such as police, fire and sanitation. The new budget also designates additional funds for a railroad crossing project and a Fourth Street bridge replacement.  The Repository
  • Malone University will host its Spring Worldview Forum on Guns in America and the Church at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Brehme Conference Center. Rev. Joyce Penfield and gun-rights advocate Jim Irvine will share their views on gun ownership and violence while David Beer moderates the forum.  The Repository

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials recommend that every AED first aid kit include naloxone and epinephrine auto-injectors to treat overdoses and severe allergic reactions. In Stark County, where 159 overdose deaths were recorded in 2022 (a sign of the opioid crisis), proper training will be added to CPR courses to help bystanders act quickly in emergencies.  The Repository
