CULTURE NEWS

  • Acme Fresh Market brings back its Spanish bar cake for its 135th anniversary celebration, featuring a twist with pineapple in its spiced batter (a nod to its supermarket legacy rooted in A&P). The nostalgic dessert is now available in stores.  The Repository

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Matt Manley is named full-time superintendent at West Branch Local Schools after serving as interim, with the Board voting unanimously on Feb. 19 and setting his term until June 2028 (he first began the interim role on Dec. 18, 2025).  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Natural Resources proposed changes for the 2026-27 deer hunting season after last season’s record harvest of over 230,000 deer, including raising bag limits in several counties and expanding the Chronic Wasting Disease area. Public comments are open until April 1 with a hearing on April 8.  The Repository

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The former Athens Restaurant, which closed last December, will be auctioned on March 20 at 12:30 p.m. at 816 Harrison Ave. SW, with the sale including its 8,000 sqft building, parking lots, and full kitchen equipment as a turnkey operation.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Boxers and a police officer will train for The Brawl 4 on Mar. 7 at Canton Memorial Civic Center, where amateurs and pros will compete in the boxing event. Local fans are encouraged to attend.  The Repository
  • Anthony Chavers capped McKinley High School's OHSAA district semifinal win over Jackson on Tuesday, March 3 with two strong dunks that sealed the game.  The Repository
  • Central Catholic's girls basketball team beat Waynedale 37-35 in the Division VI regional semifinal on Wednesday, Mar. 4, with Ellie Buckler’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer sealing the win.  The Repository
  • After beating Hillsdale, Walsh men's basketball team advanced and will host the tournament semifinals and championship on Friday, March 6 at 5 p.m. Walsh and Malone women's teams also advanced to the semis at Northwood (Walsh at 5:30 p.m. and Malone at 7:30 p.m.).  The Repository
  • The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers will meet in Canton for the annual Hall of Fame exhibition game on Aug. 6 during enshrinement week. Former stars like Fitzgerald and Kuechly are being inducted and new Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur will debut as NBC airs the game.  WKYC
  • Jackson's Polar Bears girls basketball team played against Wadsworth in an OHSAA Division I regional semifinal at Barberton High School on March 4. The contest showcased strong plays and teamwork among the teams.  The Repository
