COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Canton Public Library is expanding its Community Exploration Program this year with new passes for Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens and Beech Creek Botanical Garden & Nature Preserve. Patrons can use their library card to reserve passes online and enjoy local cultural attractions.  The Repository

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tameka Ellington will speak today at Massillon Museum in a Brown Bag Lunch talk about building the Stark County Black History Museum. The event runs from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. and is free with ASL interpretation available (provided by Disabled American Veterans).  The Repository

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stark County Job & Family Services will host foster parent meetings with an in-person session on March 3 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Division of Children Services at 402 Second St. SE and a virtual session on April 7 on Zoom.  The Repository
  • State Sen. Al Cutrona said on Feb. 23 that a bill would rename part of state Route 11 in Mahoning County the Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton Memorial Highway to honor the trooper who died on Oct. 16 when his cruiser was struck.  The Repository

SPORTS NEWS

  • Canton native Darryn Peterson defended his durability (he missed 11 games due to injuries) while averaging 19.8 points in 16 games for Kansas and faced Houston on Monday.  The Repository
  • Ohio high school boys basketball tournament for Stark teams begins today with games at 7 p.m., as Fairless faces West Muskingum and Malvern plays Tusc. Central Catholic; upcoming matchups include Canton McKinley (4) hosting Jackson (10) on March 3 and contests through Feb. 28.  The Repository
  • The OHSAA Division I state swimming championships will be held at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, with prelims on Friday and finals on Saturday. Top-seeded teams from across Ohio & Stark County qualifiers will compete in individual races and relays.  The Repository
  • The new Northeast Senate League, formed by eight Stark County high schools (including Carrollton and Claymont), seeks a founding commissioner to supervise league budgets, meetings, and promotions. Interested candidates must submit a resume to Carrollton schools by March 6.  The Repository
