COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jackson Township is planning free concerts, new business openings and public improvements including sidewalks, roundabouts and sign upgrades; sidewalk work begins in May after school ends. Community events include a celebration from June 24 to July 2 and concerts on May 21 and Aug. 13 (details on the website).  The Repository

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire on Jan. 27 displaced a family in northeast Canton when crews responded to 1721 Regal Ave. NE; no one was injured and the building (built in 1924) sustained about $40,000 in damage while the American Red Cross assisted the displaced residents.  The Repository

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Golden Corral Buffet & Grill in Jackson Township at 4910 Dressler Road NW will close on Feb. 1 after over 20 years in service. The sole Golden Corral in Stark County employs 50 staff—some may move to the Akron location.  The Repository

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Following freezing temperatures this week in Ohio, energy experts advise homeowners to save on bills by closing windows, sealing drafty doors, and setting ceiling fans to rotate clockwise (to pull heat into rooms); the Home Weatherization Assistance Program is available for upgrades.  WKYC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. DeWine urges residents to take safety measures as a deep Arctic air mass will bring extreme cold and wind chills as low as -25°F — officials advise drivers to prepare winter travel kits throughout the week.  WKYC

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ohio Department of Health advises anyone testing positive for COVID-19 to stay home until fever-free for 24 hours (without medication) and to seek care if at higher risk. State guidance remains as COVID-19 hospitalizations decline statewide.  The Repository

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new nonprofit and city partnership will build 10 affordable single-family houses on reclaimed lots in Liberty Heights this year, with groundbreaking for the first five scheduled in March (priced around $200K) to help families build equity and restore neighborhoods on Alliance's north side.  The Repository

  • Massillon Tigers running back Savior Owens committed to Michigan State University after a visit over the weekend, becoming the first pledge for the 2027 class under new coach Pat Fitzgerald.  The Repository
